Moving Day – Our Airbnb in Quito Ecuador

Moving Day – Our Airbnb in Quito Ecuador

After making our successful land border crossing from Colombia to Ecuador, we’ve finally settled into our newest long-stay Airbnb in Quito Ecuador! Quito is the capital of Ecuador and has a lot to offer. Historic sites, vibrant culture, natural wonders, great food, cheap, well-publicized public transportation, and lots of volcanoes!

And we know people in Quito, so that will be the icing on what we know will be a really fun travel cake.

So how did we get to our Airbnb in Quito Ecuador? What is it like and how do we like it?

Let’s find out.

Getting From Taganga, Colombia to Quito, Ecuador

This wasn’t nearly as straightforward as it was supposed to be in our original travel plan.

Our original plan (before the Peru political protests) was to fly to Quito, Ecuador from Lima, Peru on January 26. But the Peru political protests blew up that plan. We left Peru for the beaches and mountains of Colombia, instead of staying for our planned third month in Arequipa, Peru.

All things said it was a sweet plan B.

But we still needed to get to Ecuador, since we had 3 months’ worth of Airbnbs, as well as exit air travel, already locked in!

We ended up making a land crossing at the Colombia-Ecuador border, then traveling to Quito, Ecuador by bus. This was an involved process requiring many steps, but it all worked out just fine!

It was quite the adventure, deserving of its own post.

Read all about it: Crossing the Colombia-Ecuador Border on Foot.

Welcome to Our New Airbnb in Quito Ecuador!

This is a cool, quirky place!

As usual, we found our long-stay Airbnb following the detailed methods we describe in our post: A TTT Guide to Long-Term Airbnb Stays – How to Get a Cheap Apartment that Doesn’t Drive You Crazy.

We are on the 4th floor of an apartment building attached to a shockingly good empanada cafe. The owner of the cafe, Alicia, owns and manages the Airbnbs in our building along with her son Gabriel.

Of course, we will consume many empanadas at the cafe this month!

The rudeness surcharge for empanadas is explained on the left.
Where empanada magic happens.
Empanadas as big as your head!

But the cafe is only one perk of our actual Airbnb.

Entering the apartment you see a really comfortable living room, with a proper sectional couch perfect for two to stretch out on, a hammock for lounging, and a small tube TV from the 1990s. We don’t really watch much TV, so that was never an issue when we booked the place. Like with much of humanity, our devices have taken over that role.

Attached to the living room is a well-equipped kitchen with bar seating, a MICROWAVE (yay!), and all of the basic kitchen equipment needed for our 28-day stay. We won’t need to purchase much to make up for any personal preference deficiencies here!

Moving into the short hallway on the far end of the kitchen, there are two bedrooms with full-sized beds and wall-sized wardrobes. Plenty of places to put your stuff!

Bedroom #1 – We sleep here because fewer windows mean less light, less road noise, and better sleep.

Bedroom #2 – The dog house.

And finally, we have a small, but well-laid-out bathroom with a sink and hot shower.

I know I suggested this when we moved into our Airbnb in Lima, Peru, but having shelves for your personal bathroom items is such a big deal. They more than make up for the size of a small bathroom, so we are happy to have them here!

Finally, all of the apartments in our building have access to the rooftop terrace! From here you can see many of the sights of modern Ecuador, as well as 360 degrees of mountain and volcano views!

This will be a great place to watch sunsets.

So for all of this including utilities and superfast internet, we are paying $12.01/night (with 35% long-stay discount). This is the cheapest Airbnb that we have booked for our entire first year of travel!

Couldn’t be more pleased with our Airbnb in Quito Ecuador.

Until next time…
