Moving Day – Our New Airbnb in Oaxaca (Mexico)
Another month has come and gone, meaning it is time to leave San Cristobal de las Casas. We enjoyed our time there and appreciated everything the town had to offer, although we could have done without the stomach bugs!
Keep an eye out for a wrap-up post from our time in San Cristobal de las Casas once things settle down. We just moved into our new Airbnb in Oaxaca, Mexico, so things have been a little crazy for the last couple of days.
What do we mean? We’ll show you.
Why Go To Oaxaca?
Oaxaca (more formally known as Oaxaca de Juárez) is the capital of the Mexican state of Oaxaca.
Located at an altitude of 5,102 ft (1,555 m), the tropical savannah climate here is a bit more moderate than in other parts of Mexico. The daytime high temperature doesn’t usually get much warmer than 90 degrees F (depending on season). Yet evenings cool down to the 50-degree F range, which is perfect for sleeping.
So not too hot, not too cold, and low humidity. Perfect.
Oaxaca has a colorful and culturally rich historical city center that, along with the archeological ruins of nearby Monte Alban, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is known for its cuisine and Spanish colonial architectural style, punctuated by impressive cathedrals and local markets. Not to mention that this region is famous for mezcal, the favored local spirit.
Some of the street art is pretty impressive too.
And to top things off, there are abundant opportunities in the area for escaping into nature. Although the arid ecosystems will be an interesting twist on our usual hiking adventures.
Getting From San Cristobal de las Casas to our Airbnb in Oaxaca
Although this migration was pretty straightforward on paper, there was a bit more pain and suffering than usual.
On Thursday night we hopped on an ADO night bus which left San Cristobal de las Casas at 9 pm and arrived in Oaxaca at 9:45 am.
At $61.21 USD per person, the bus ride might seem a little pricey at first blush. But considering the number of kilometers traveled, it was easily the most economical option for the situation.
But man, the 12+ hour ride made our previous ADO bus trips seem easy!
We arrived in Oaxaca a bit sore and slap-happy, but otherwise intact.
We had a problem though. Since we couldn’t check into our Airbnb until 2 pm, we had to find a way to kill some time.
Thankfully we had that all figured out. Before our arrival, we were in Facebook contact with a local group of slow travelers and expats who, through dumb luck, were planning a brunch meetup the day we arrived.
So we stowed our luggage at the bus station and met them for brunch!
The time just flew by! We swapped tall travel tales for several hours and before we knew it, it was time to check into our Airbnb.
It was great to make new travel friends in Oaxaca and we hope to get together again with them soon!
Welcome to Our New Airbnb in Oaxaca!
As usual, we found our long-stay Airbnb in Oaxaca using the detailed methods we describe in our post: A TTT Guide to Long-Term Airbnb Stays – How to Get a Cheap Apartment that Doesn’t Drive You Crazy.
Our Airbnb is in Barrio de la Noria, a quaint local neighborhood about a 15-minute walk from Centro Historico.
The location is great and the apartment is HUGE!
Let’s take a look.
Entering our apartment complex and heading up to the second level, you first see our covered terrace.
Entering the front door, you first see our kitchen.
Through the kitchen door, you first enter the dining room with service for six people.
And turning 180 degrees, you can see our living room. Plenty of seating. We’ll need it!
Connected to the living room is a hallway that leads to our bathroom.
And also connected to the living room are two bedrooms, each with a full-sized bed, nightstands, and plenty of places to put clothes.
So for all of this, including utilities and 50 Mbps download speed internet, we are paying $38.82 USD/night (including a 30% long-stay discount that offsets the 19% Mexican government Airbnb tax add-on).
You may be thinking that this place is pricier than normal for us, and you’d be right.
But we wanted to get a place that would be perfect for entertaining. For nearly the entire month we are in Oaxaca we will be having friends from the USA staying with us, so we are super excited!
Travel is always more fun when you can share your experiences with others.
Needless to say, February is going to be eventful!
Until next time…
