Our Garden of Eden – The Jungle Wildlife of OjoBIO

Our Garden of Eden – The Jungle Wildlife of OjoBIO

We are definitely living the slow travel life at OjoBIO, our latest Airbnb in Bocas del Toro province.

Without easy access to any sort of civilization, we are left to entertain ourselves at the OjoBIO property. And usually, this involves exploring the area for new and interesting wildlife!

Our little corner of paradise.

For some of you that may sound dreadful. But as a naturalist couple, this is a pretty good deal for us!

And cost-effective too. Unless we go into town, there is nothing to spend money on!

Here are what our days have been looking like in recent weeks.

Our OjoBIO Jungle Life in the Garden of Eden

We wake up in the morning, drink coffee, read the news of the day, and study Spanish until 9 or 10 am.

Then if the water is clear, we usually snorkel for a couple of hours. If the water is murky, we might kayak instead.

In the early afternoon, we take an hour or two to eat lunch. We try not to use the stove to keep the heat down, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

During the hottest part of the day (2 – 6 pm), we usually turn on the fans and read, or take care of some internet business.

Or we might go down to the dock if there is a breeze and cool off on the lounge chair under the shade of the dock house. It is often much cooler there, but if there is no breeze the biting insects can be terrible! And if conditions are good, we might go for another snorkel or kayak run.

Afterward, if it is an exercise day, we squeeze in a resistance band workout wherever it is cool and breezy. Sometimes that is at the dock house by the water, and sometimes that is on our screened-in Airbnb porch.

Then we cook dinner, look at (or edit) our photos for the day, and catch up on any digital work that needs doing.

We then wind down for the evening over videos or use the time to contact our friends and family.

But at all times we keep our eyes open for wildlife.

Rhonda usually has her camera on her whenever we leave the Airbnb. And we often spontaneously explore the property for wildlife, by day or night, weather permitting.

But at all times there are interesting things to see! And often we can see some pretty cool stuff right from our porch.

Here are some of our best jungle sightings at OjoBIO. There is an amazing amount of biodiversity here, and we know we are missing a lot!

If only we could climb like monkeys.

So enjoy! And be sure to click the pictures for higher-resolution versions.

Mammals

A 2-Toed Sloth taking a nap. They are nocturnal and have a frustrating habit of hiding their faces whenever we see them!

More sleeping 2-Toed Sloths, this time a mother and baby. You can clearly see the baby’s face, with the mother’s head (face up) directly to the left. And yes, they are snuggling.

Greater Sac-winged Bats, unhappy to be disturbed during the day.

3-Toed Sloths are NOT nocturnal and don’t seem to mind mugging for the camera. Note the brown eye mask, which helps distinguish them from their 2-toed cousins.

This is a FEMALE Yellow-headed Gecko. Looks like a completely different species than the male!
On our trip back from grocery shopping, this Slender Panamanian Anole almost fell into our grocery bags from a tree!

Amphibians

A chunky Cane Toad.
A big Smoky Jungle Frog.

Tiny Striped Rocket Frog, also highly toxic.

Insects

A White Peacock Butterfly.
A Malachite Butterfly, snacking on rotting fruit.
A Banded Peacock Butterfly, enjoying the flora.

General Arthropods

A Golden silk orb-weaver.
A Yellow-spotted Millipede.
A Blue Land Crab.
A Fiddler Crab, type unknown.
A Mangrove Crab, not happy to be spotted.

And there is so much more to see!

Sadly, most wildlife photography seems to be based on luck…having the right equipment in the right place at the right time.

We have seen much more, but we either missed the shot, were in terrible conditions for photography, or didn’t have our gear.

And although there are plenty of birds here, they have too many places to hide!

Peek-a-boo!

All that said, we still think we are doing pretty good!

And we will be making a similar post about the local marine life living around our coral reef. We finally figured out how to use our GoPro knockoff effectively underwater!

There is some really cool stuff here. More to come!

Until next time…
